Dear Simon Fraser Families, 

We have had a wonderful final week together learning and building community. As we head into winter break, we hope you have a warm and happy holiday with your family. Our main office will be closed over the break, re-opening January 8 at 7:30 AM. 

Here are a few updates and reminders for when we return from break:

Thank you to all families who were able to contribute this year. The generosity of our school community is so appreciated. 

Physical Education

All classes will begin their Dance Unit after Winter Break. Students will not need to change into gym strip for this unit, however we would like to ensure students have appropriate footwear for Dance; i.e. no boots or footwear that will mark the floor please. Each grade will focus on a different type of dance; Grades 5 & 6 will learn Folk Dances from around the world, Grade 7’s will learn a variety of Line Dances, Grade 8’s will focus on Square Dance and Grade 9’s will learn Social Dances such as the jive, two-step and waltz. Should you have any questions about the dance unit, please contact your child’s P.E. teacher. 

Athletics

Volleyball Tryouts will begin on the first day back from Winter Break. Grade 6-8 students are to attend the Junior team tryouts with Grade 9’s attending the senior team tryouts. For morning tryouts, please do not drop your student off prior to 6:50 am as the doors to the school will not be open until then. For after school tryouts, please have a ride ready to pick up your student immediately following the end of the tryout time. Please communicate with coaches if your student is interested in trying out but is unable to attend a specific tryout date.

A Message from your School Council

The school council is currently in the early planning stages of coordinating a parent educational opportunity focused on online safety and more specifically, how to talk to your children about their online presence and interactions. We are looking for a speaker/educator who has expertise in this area and would be willing to come to our school to speak to parents (note: this is not a request for a volunteer- this person would be paid for their time). While we are confident, we can find a speaker, we wanted to first ask if we have any parents in our school community who have direct expertise and experience (e.g. conducting educational speaking engagements specific to online etiquette and safety) who would like to be considered for this opportunity. If this sounds like you and you are interested in sharing your expertise, please contact our assistant principal Ms. Varner.
