As we settle into a new school year, I would like to take a moment to sincerely thank all our families for the hard work, patience, and support you have shown in helping students transition back to school. This time of year is rarely easy for anyone. New routines, schedules, expectations, and friendships can take time to adjust to, and we greatly appreciate your partnership as we work together to support our students.
Change can be especially challenging for students who are joining our school community after attending another school. We recognize that these transitions can bring a mix of excitement and uncertainty, and we are committed to helping every student feel welcomed, connected, and successful. Thank you for the encouragement and reassurance you provide at home as students navigate these changes.
I would also like to address an important concern regarding traffic safety around our school. With the increase in traffic at arrival and dismissal times, and with the days becoming shorter, student safety is becoming an increasingly significant concern. We all play a role in ensuring that students can travel to and from school safely each day.
We ask that all families please follow these important safety reminders:
- No U-turns on 33rd Street. If you need to change directions, please circle around the block. This is the safest option for everyone.
- Do not park in the school parking lot for student drop-off or pick-up. This area is intended for staff and authorized vehicles. Please also remind students not to walk through the parking lot, as it is not a designated pedestrian area.
- Slow down and use extra caution. We would always prefer that a student arrive a few minutes late rather than risk being injured.
- Watch carefully for students crossing at 52nd Street and 33rd Street. Many students use these crossings before and after school, and your attentiveness helps keep everyone safe.
Thank you for your continued partnership, cooperation, and commitment to keeping our students safe. Together, we can ensure that every child has a positive and successful start to the school year.

Inform| Bus Safety
Using CBE transportation is also a service which parents/guardians set up and pay for. All students who take the bus must follow the Student Code of Conduct.
Please review the following expectations with your child(ren). It’s important for them to understand and follow these expectations: SAFETY AND CONDUCT ON THE BUS
Inform| Lunchtime Expectations
For grade 6 students, staying at school for lunch is a service that parents/guardians set up and pay for. Students are supervised by lunch supervisors, so students have a break with their peers. Students must follow all the school rules which apply throughout the day. For information pertaining to overall lunchroom expectations, please view the following link: LUNCHTIME STUDENT EXPECTATIONS
Our grades 7 to 9 students are permitted to leave campus at lunch, if parents/guardians permit. If a student or their family wishes to withdraw permission for a student to leave campus at lunch, please inform the office. Additionally, students are asked to leave backpacks at the school and ensure they are back in time for period 5 classes.
Inform | Homerooms and Complementary Course
Please note that we are not accepting student homeroom or complementary course change requests. Students have been placed thoughtfully into homeroom classes by our teaching team based on a variety of factors.
With respect to complementary courses, when students submitted their course requests they identified their top five choices. These selections are entered into our enrollment system, which automatically assigns students to available courses. While the system works to honor student preferences whenever possible, it must also balance enrollment numbers and accommodate the requests of the entire student body. As a result, students are placed in courses from their request list, but enrollment in a specific course is not guaranteed. Course requests in the spring also dictated staffing decisions, and our construction modernization has also impacted what is offered and when it is offered.
We understand that students may sometimes feel disappointed if they are not placed in the class they were hoping for. As parents/guardians, your guidance and support in helping your child navigate these feelings is invaluable. Learning to manage challenges and disappointments is an important part of growth, and building resiliency in these moments will benefit students throughout their lives.
Inform| Wellness Initiatives
Our first Wellness initiative takes place on Friday, September 11th. At Simon Fraser, we use this day to develop strong connections between peers and teach important skills to foster and maintain healthy relationships.
We will spend the day in our homeroom groups participating in team building activities to nurture a community of trust, openness, and of course fun.
Invite| Meet the Teacher
You are invited to our annual Meet the Teacher night taking place on September 17th from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm to learn more about the academic, social, and well-being goals for this year. You will also have a chance to learn about your child’s classroom routines and expectations. Please note that this is not a time for one-to-one conversations about specific students.
Request| Annual Forms
The following annual forms are to be completed in SchoolEngage (MYCBE) by September 14th, 2027.
- Demographic Verification Form
- Annual Authorization Form
- Citizenship Information Update Form
- Volunteer Registration Form
Please complete forms at your earliest convenience!
Request| Health Forms
Students who become ill during school hours should inform their teacher and report to the office. Staff will then contact parents/guardians to pick up their child or give permission for him/her to go home. Students are not permitted to leave the school without parental permission. Remember to keep our office up to date with any changes in contact information.
Student Health Emergency Response Protocol Form
This form is to be used when there is a student health issue regarding attention. This includes when there is a request to administer medication.
This form is to be completed if:
- A physical or medical condition may affect the student's attendance at school
- Medication is to be taken at school,
Forms must be reviewed and updated annually or sooner if there is a change in the student's health concern or school registration.
Remind| School Hours
Students should not arrive at school earlier than 7:45 am as this is when our doors open and the staff is available to supervise. The only exception to this time is when students are expected to be here for tryouts, practices, and/or fine/performing arts programing.
Request| Student Handbook
This week, teachers reviewed the Simon Fraser School Handbook with students. This handbook contains a lot of information. Parents/guardians are asked to review information in this handbook, sign and return the back page by September 11, 2026.
Request| Volunteers
To ensure the safety and security of CBE students and staff, all volunteers must be registered with the school each school year before participating in volunteer activities.
The Annual Volunteer Registration Form is valid for the current school year only. All volunteers, including returning volunteers, must complete a new registration form each school year before participating in volunteer activities.
Parents and guardians can register as volunteers through the SchoolEngage tab in their MyCBE account. As part of the registration process, all volunteers must review the Alberta's Protection of Privacy Act (POPA) requirements and sign to indicate their agreement with the conditions outlined in the form.
Community members who do not have a child registered with CBE must complete their volunteer registration in person at the school where they wish to volunteer. This change allows school staff to verify that volunteers have reviewed and acknowledged their privacy obligations under POPA.
Request| Traffic Safety and Punctuality
As students return to school, please remember the importance of being on time and being safe around Simon Fraser School. We expect all families to respect and follow the traffic safety laws. See below for key points:
- Students should use crosswalks and ensure drivers are stopped prior to crossing the road
- The roads in front of the school are not for parking. If you wish to wait in the school grounds with your child prior to school starting, you must park in the surrounding communities. We appreciate your cooperation!
- Do not use the staff parking lots for drop-off or pick-up at any time!
- Do not park in any of the designated bus lanes assigned by the City of Calgary.
- Walk with your child on the sidewalks and not through the parking lot.
- When driving through a school zone, remember:
- Children do not perceive traffic like adults do – extra caution is needed.
- The maximum permitted speed is 30 km/hr from 7:30 a.m. until 9 p.m.
- Passing is not allowed within a school zone during the hours that the zone is in effect.
- If you are driving South on 33rd Street, do not make u-turns in front of the school. Drive around the block or turn around at the bottom of the street
- Do NOT Park:
- within 5 m of a crosswalk. This ensures children are visible to other road users.
- within 1.5 m of a driveway or garage.
We expect students to be on time for school. This means they are in their classrooms at 8:00 a.m. ready to learn. If students come to school after 8:00 a.m., they must go directly to the office and sign in.
