Inform| Halloween

Halloween is a fun and exciting time that many students eagerly anticipate throughout the year. At Simon Fraser School, we share that excitement and look forward to celebrating together. As we do so, we remain committed to fostering a safe, caring, and inclusive environment for everyone.

Students who choose to wear costumes on Friday October 30, 2026, are reminded that costumes must not include weapons or full-face masks and should not appropriate cultures or religions. All costumes should reflect respect for diversity and uphold our shared values of inclusion, kindness, and belonging.

During Wellness on October 30, students will have the opportunity to participate in Halloween-themed activities. We recognize that not all families celebrate Halloween, and alternative activities will be available for any students who prefer not to participate. If your family does not recognize Halloween, and you do not want your child to participate, please let your child's homeroom teacher know so that we can plan accordingly.

Inform| CBE Well-Being Survey
Each year, Calgary Board of Education (CBE) students are invited to participate in surveys that gather feedback about their learning experiences, well-being, engagement, and school environment. Survey results help schools and the CBE evaluate programs, inform planning, and identify opportunities to better support student success and well-being.

The CBE Student Survey is an anonymous, voluntary online perception survey administered twice during the school year. A shorter set of questions is administered in the fall, while the spring survey contains the full complement of questions.

Topics may include:

  • School connectedness and belonging
  • Positive relationships
  • Feeling safe at school
  • Well-being and self-regulation
  • Awareness of self and others

Participation in these surveys helps the CBE better understand student experiences and identify areas of strength and opportunities for improvement.

Important Information About the Survey

  • Participation is voluntary.
  • Individual student responses are anonymous.
  • Students may skip any question they do not wish to answer.
  • Students may stop participating at any time without consequence.
  • Survey results are used for school and system planning, reporting, program evaluation, and continuous improvement.
  • Survey results are not used to make decisions about individual students.
  • School staff supervise survey administration to support student privacy and well-being.

Consent for student participation in CBE surveys was collected through the Annual Authorization Forms in SchoolEngage.

  • If you selected Yes, your child may participate in applicable surveys.
  • If you selected No, your child will not participate in applicable surveys.

If you have already completed the Annual Authorization Forms, no further action is required.

This information is being provided to all families as notification that the survey will be administered at Simon Fraser School on: November 3–5 and November 17–19, 2026. Students will participate during their scheduled class session.

If you have not yet completed the Annual Authorization Forms, please submit your consent preference through SchoolEngage by Monday, November 2, 2026

If you are unable to access SchoolEngage, please contact the school at 403-777-7290 before this date for assistance or to provide your consent preference directly.

If no response is received by the response deadline, parental consent will be assumed, and your child may participate in the survey. Regardless of parental consent status, student participation remains voluntary.

  1. Sign in to your MyCBE account.
  2. Select the SchoolEngage icon.
  3. Open the Annual Authorization Forms.

Invite| Overview of High School Presentation

We are pleased to invite grade 9 parents/guardians to a virtual High School presentation.

  • Date: November 18, 2026
  • Time: 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm

This presentation will provide valuable information about the transition to high school to help prepare families/students for upcoming registrations/course selections. The link will be shared with grade 9 parents/guardians closer to the date.

Invite| Remembrance Day Assembly

Simon Fraser School invites families to join us as we honour members of the Armed Forces and veterans who have courageously defended peace around the world and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Our Remembrance Day ceremonies will take place on Tuesday November 10, 2026:

  • Assembly #1: 10:15-10:50
  • Assembly #2: 11:10-11:45

These assemblies provide an important opportunity for our students to reflect on the values of peace, gratitude, and remembrance as we pay tribute to those who have served, and continue to serve, our country.

Families are warmly welcome to attend. We encourage all students to wear a poppy as a sign of respect; poppies will be available from teachers for those who do not already have one.

Remind| Winter Weather

Winter weather (including snow, cold temperatures, and wind chill) can make getting to and from school challenging. Families are reminded that extra caution should be taken during the winter months and periods of extreme weather.

Families should be prepared for transportation delays and check for the status of their bus in the morning. You can find more information, including transportation service provider apps, on the Using Transportation in Cold Weather page.

Assume that schools are open. Information regarding any school closures due to weather will be posted on the CBE website and social media and shared with local news media.

We respect the right of parents/guardians to make their own decisions about sending their children to school. If your child is not attending classes, please ensure you contact your school's attendance line to report on the absence.

Update| Grade 9 Sailing Trip

We have received 34 applications for our two sailing trips planned for Spring 2027. We were hoping to take at least 40 students across the two trips to make them financially and logistically feasible.

Over the next few weeks, we will explore partnering with another junior high or middle school to determine whether there are additional students interested in participating. This would help us reach the numbers needed to proceed with both trips as planned.

If your child is still interested in joining us, or if you have any questions about the trips, please do not hesitate to contact Mr. Komori.
