As we move into November, we continue to applaud the efforts of our students and staff to navigate the expectations of the school year.

We look forward to next week as we honour our armed forces and veterans. Because Remembrance Day falls during the fall break, our school ceremony takes place on Thursday, November 7th. We encourage the school population to show their respect at the somber ceremony by wearing a poppy, which will be available from teachers if they don't already have one.

Invite| Child and Youth Well-Being Series

The Calgary Board of Education invites all parents and guardians to join us in a pre-recorded and live online series focusing on child and youth well-being. These sessions will be hosted in partnership with experts from Alberta Health Services and Recovery Alberta and will explore topics such as Peer Pressure, Healthy Relationships, Mental Health for Highly Sensitive Teens, and navigating Parent-Teen relationships.

Reminder| Social Media

We wanted to bring to your attention concerns regarding students’ use of social media outside of school hours.

Since the beginning of the school year, we have been made aware of a couple of instances where students have used abusive and threatening language toward each other on social media. Additionally, we have seen a rise in social media accounts using the Simon Fraser name and logo for inappropriate content.

While we cannot control students’ online activities outside of school, we are obligated to inform parents if we are notified of any cyberbullying incidents. Additionally, we must report any accounts that defame our staff, students or the school.

Please keep in mind that most social media platforms, including Facebook, Snapchat, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, Discord and Skype, require users to be at least 13 years old. For YouTube, while there is no age restriction for watching videos, users need to be 13 or older to create their own account.

We recognize the challenges of navigating the online world, especially given the vast amount of accessible content. Once posted, it can be challenging to remove content from social media. We urge all parents to remain vigilant and monitor their child’s online activity. Please remind children that threatening, abusive, or defamatory content can result in police involvement.

Thank you for your attention to this matter and for helping us maintain a safe and respectful community.

Invite| Remembrance Day Ceremonies

In recognition of our armed services, veterans and fallen soldiers, the Simon Fraser School Remembrance Day ceremonies will take place on Thursday, November 7, 2024. Parent/guardian and guest seating will commence at 9:50 am.

Request| Winter Clothing

If your child needs winter clothing for the season, and finances are a barrier, please contact me via email indicating what is needed and what sizes are preferred, and we can help find what is needed.

Reminder| Attendance

Many parents are emailing teachers regarding student absences which is causing some confusion.

Moving forward, parents/guardians should contact the main office to report a child late or absent on the attendance line (403-777-7290, PRESS 1) or can email Ms. Mirza directly at mamirza@cbe.ab.ca. Please be sure to include your child's first and last name, reason and duration of the absence. Taking the time to let us know that your child will be absent before school starts helps us to complete attendance accurately and reduces the automated calls you receive.

If you are going on vacation, or if your child/ren will be away for more than a week, an Extended Absence Form is required.

Please visit our school website for more information.
