Reminder| Using Transportation in Cold Weather
Students and parents are reminded that extra caution should be taken during the winter months and periods of extreme weather. Calgary’s weather can include cold temperatures, wind chill and snow that make getting to and from school challenging. Please take a moment and review this important information with your children.
- During the winter, roads may be congested and slippery resulting in possible traffic and bus delays. Unusually cold or stormy weather can also result in buses being delayed. Unexpected mechanical problems with the bus may occur more frequently at this time of year. Children should be dressed appropriately for the colder weather as buses cool off very quickly. When there are delays:
 - Fenton uses Fenton Bus Status
 - Southland Transportation uses MyBusStop App and My School Bus Monitor
 - Children should be warmly dressed and well prepared for winter weather, and not left unattended at bus stops for any period of time, under any circumstances. They should have clear instructions on how long to wait for the bus and what to do if the bus does not arrive.
 - Families should ensure that they have back-up care arrangements if transportation is delayed. Children should have a warm place to stay before and after school (i.e. with a neighbour or a nearby relative).
 - Children will find it easier to walk through the ice and snow when their schoolbooks and lunches are carried in a back pack.

Update| Simon Fraser Library
We extend our heartfelt thank you to families who supported our scholastic book fair in November which helped us to stock up our library more with new books and brand-new display spinner to highlight those new books. Stay tuned for next month's update about our new book collection which is currently being processed.
February is black history month
During Black History Month, we will celebrate the many achievements and contributions of Black Canadians who, throughout history, have done so much to make Canada a culturally diverse, compassionate, and prosperous country. Our library is proud to have books that explore the history and the achievements and stories of the black people in Canada and beyond.
This month library will be stocked up with our black history collections which includes Novels from black authors, Non-Fiction books highlighting the black Canadian heritage and picture books to relate to the stories of black Canadians. Check out some award-winning book recommendations for black history heritage mostly available at our library: https://school.teachingbooks.net/tb.cgi?wid=8
Students can also check out CBE e-library for finding books and resources related to our Canadian black heritage.
