Inform| Orange Shirt Day
Orange Shirt Day grew out of Phyllis Webstad’s story of having her shiny new orange shirt taken away on her first day of school, and it has become an opportunity to keep the discussion on all aspects of residential schools occurring annually. Orange Shirt Day occurs at this time of year when children were historically taken from their homes to residential schools, and because it is an opportunity to set the stage for anti-racism and anti-bullying policies for the coming school year. Orange Shirt Day is also an opportunity for all communities to come together in the spirit of reconciliation and hope for generations of children to come.
On September 26th, students are encouraged to wear an orange shirt. We can all promote reconciliation in welcoming, caring, respectful, safe, and inclusive school communities by wearing an orange shirt.
Volunteering | Police Information Check
We encourage parents and guardians to get involved in the school, whether by volunteering for fieldtrips, joining our school council or attending after school events. If you do not have a valid Police Information Check (PIC), please connect with Ms. Casagranda (Amanda) at the main office. PIC’s are valid for 5 years and can be shared with other CBE schools throughout the years.
You're welcome to pop into the office on Sept 19 - Meet the Teacher Night to start your clearance process.
Reminder| Athletics & Extra Curricular
We kindly remind all spectators, athletes and parents/legal guardians that they must conduct themselves in respectable ways at events. Specifically, all athletics must be conducted with a high standard of courtesy, fair play and sportsmanship in mind. All those involved share this responsibility. We expect that students and adults demonstrate courtesy and good sportsmanship by positive cheers of encouragement for their team, not against the opposing team. This is evidenced by the absence of booing and vulgarities. Spectators, athletes and coaches must also show proper acceptance of officials’ judgment.
Please note the following for all basketball games played at Simon Fraser School:
Students:
- Student spectators are allowed to watch basketball games without parent/guardian supervision for the first game of the night (4:30-5:30). If students are wishing to stay past this time, they need parent/guardian supervision in the gym. Please note, there are a limited number of spots available on a first come first serve basis.
 - Students are expected to be in the main gym watching the game(s) and supporting all players/coaches/referees/parents/guardians in a positive manner.
 - Any student who is not meeting the CBE Student Code of Conduct will be asked to leave the school and may lose future viewing privileges

Parents/guardians:
- All parents/guardians of current athletes are welcome to attend games.
 - Parents/guardians who bring family members under the age of 18 are expected to supervise their child(ren) in the main gym.
 - All parents/guardians are expected to cheer/support all players, coaches, referees, parents/guardians in a positive manner.
 - If parents/guardians are engaging in any inappropriate behaviour directed towards players/coaches/referees/parents/guardians, the game will be paused, and the parent/guardian will be asked to stop. If the inappropriate behaviour continues, the game will be stopped again and will not re-start until the parent/guardian leaves the gym and school property. If removed, the parent/guardian may lose future viewing privileges.

Students from other schools (non-players) and alumni:
- Will not be admitted into the school, for any game(s), unless specific permission is granted by administration.

Our main goal is to provide a safe and fun opportunity for students. Please keep in mind the following:
- The players are kids.
 - The coaches are volunteers.
 - The referees are human.
 - There will be no scholarships or professional contracts handed out at the end of the night.

We appreciate all the positive support. Go Flames!
Inform| Physical Education
Our Physical Education program is in full swing, and we would like to remind families of the importance of proper footwear. We are happy to provide PE to all students daily (Monday to Friday), so it is important that students have a pair of running/athletic shoes at school every day. Lockers are available for students who need to store their shoes or extra clothing. Crocs, Slides, Boots will not be permitted for use in PE activities. Thank you for your support in this matter of safety.

Inform| Off-Campus Trips within Walking Distance
As part of outreaching/learning work, there are times when our staff will work with students off school property in the community.
Field trips close to our school can complement classroom learning by giving students opportunities to explore the community around their school. As parents/guardians, you will no longer need to fill out a consent form for your child to go on a class trip that is walking distance from the school, e.g. to a local park. Appropriate walking distance is determined by the principal and may vary, depending on the age of the students.
Examples of possible walking distance locations include:
- Parks and greenspaces in Brentwood
 - Nose Hill Park

As with any field trip, there are some common hazards involved with walking trips to various locations in and around the community. Please note this list may not include all the hazards for a given trip:
- Slips, trips and falls;
 - Getting separated from the group;
 - Street crossings;
 - Pre-existing medical conditions and/or allergies
 - Wildlife Encounters
 - Exposure to infectious diseases (e.g. COVID-19 virus, SARS, MERS, influenza)

Other than regular Physical Education activities, teachers will send home information about trips planned to local sites. This will be communicated via School Messenger.
If you have questions about field trips within walking distance of the school, feel free to contact us.
Request| Individual Program Plan Input
We value your input as a parent/guardian. If your child has an Individual Program Plan (IPP), please complete the IPP form below (see link) to help us understand your student better and begin putting together the conditions for success/goals for your child.
- IPP Parent/Guardian Input Form
 - Deadline: Monday September 23
 - Thank you for taking the time to collaborate with us.

Reminder| Traffic Safety
Over the past week, we have been reminding our grade 7-9 students to cross the street safely at corners and crosswalks when they go off-campus. We have seen many students running across the street in the middle of the block when there is oncoming traffic. Please have a conversation with your child(ren) about the importance of safety.
To further support our community in this regard, I am including links to valuable traffic safety resources:
