Oki • Hello • Bonjour
Thank you to the staff/students who participated in Orange Shirt Day today. Family/community support helps us recognize the history and ongoing impact of the residential school system on Indigenous peoples in Canada. It is an opportunity to learn, reflect, and show commitment to the process of reconciliation. Orange Shirt Day and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation (Sept. 30) teach us how to listen, learn, and act at school and at home so that every child matters.
Today, our students took time to reflect on their personal commitments to Truth and Reconciliation as treaty people. Each student wrote their commitment on an orange ribbon, symbolizing the spirit of Orange Shirt Day and the importance of remembering that Every Child Matters. These ribbons were then tied to the school fence, creating a powerful visual display of our collective promise to honour and learn from the past, so that we can walk forward together as a school community.

Inform| Northwest Classic Junior Basketball Tournament
Simon Fraser and HD Cartwright are hosting our Northwest Classic Junior Basketball Tournament next week on October 1-3. Both schools will be following the Basketball Spectator Rules used for Basketball league games in our Basketball Division.
Spectators are welcome in gyms, but students from other participating schools must be supervised by their parent or guardian at all times. Host schools will turn away student spectators from another school if they are not supervised by their parent or guardian. Please make sure students are aware of this.
We would also appreciate it if athletes stay in the gym or in the hallway directly next to the gym, rather than wandering the hallways and exploring other parts of the schools.
Good luck to all participants, we hope you enjoy your experience at the Tournament. If you have any questions, please contact Meagan Craig at mecraig@cbe.ab.ca.

Inform| Off-Campus Trips within Walking Distance
As part of outreaching/learning work, there are times when our staff will work with students off school property in the community.
Field trips close to our school can complement classroom learning by giving students opportunities to explore the community around their school. As parents/guardians, you do not need to fill out a consent form for your child to go on a class trip that is walking distance from the school, e.g. to a local park. Appropriate walking distance is determined by the principal and may vary, depending on the age of the students.
Examples of possible walking distance locations include:
- Parks and greenspaces in Brentwood
 - Nose Hill Park

As with any field trip, there are some common hazards involved with walking trips to various locations in and around the community. Please note this list may not include all the hazards for a given trip:
- Slips, trips and falls;
 - Getting separated from the group;
 - Street crossings;
 - Pre-existing medical conditions and/or allergies
 - Wildlife Encounters
 - Exposure to infectious diseases (e.g. COVID-19 virus, SARS, MERS, influenza)

Other than regular Physical Education activities, teachers will send home information about trips planned to local sites. This will be communicated via School Messenger.
If you have questions about field trips within walking distance of the school, feel free to contact us.
Inform| OurSCHOOL Survey
Over the next two weeks, students will be participating in an online school perception survey called the OurSCHOOL Student Survey. This anonymous survey is completely voluntary for all CBE students. Please find the details of the survey implementation below.
All students provide feedback on:
- sense of belonging
 - positive relationships
 - anxiety
 - feeling safe at school
 - life satisfaction
 - general health
 - orientation to well-being
 - goal-oriented

Additionally, Grades 6-9 students provide feedback on depression, self-esteem and cultural awareness of self.
Demographic questions are also asked on this survey for norming purposes. These include age, gender, Indigenous status, immigrant status, home language. Grades 6-9 students will answer additional questions on grade repeater, reasons for changing schools, disability or medical conditions that limit participation in school activities or learning.
