As Halloween arrives, I want to wish everyone a fun, safe, and enjoyable evening. Whether you’re out trick-or-treating, spending time with friends and family, or simply enjoying the festivities at home, students are encouraged to take care and look out for one another.

Please take a moment to remind students to be visible, stay with their group, and show kindness and respect to those in our community as they celebrate. Let’s keep the spirit of Halloween lighthearted, safe and fun for everyone!

Invite| Remembrance Day Assembly

Simon Fraser School invites families to join us as we honour the members of the Armed Forces and veterans who have courageously defended peace around the world and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Our Remembrance Day ceremonies will take place on Friday, November 7:

  • Assembly #1: 8:40–9:10 a.m.
  • Assembly #2: 9:25–9:55 a.m.

These gatherings provide an important opportunity for our students to reflect on the values of peace, gratitude, and remembrance as we pay tribute to those who have served, and continue to serve, our country.

Families are warmly welcome to attend. We encourage all students to wear a poppy as a sign of respect; poppies will be available from teachers for those who do not already have one.

Inform| School Initiatives

Leadership 9 runs a Fall Food Drive in support of The Calgary Food Bank and Veterans Food Bank of Alberta. Students are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items (canned goods, packaged foods, granola bars, cereals, etc.) and other new household items (cleaning supplies, diapers, feminine hygiene products, pet food/supplies). Donations will be accepted by the end of November.

Grade 7 Leadership is sponsoring a clothing drive. Jacket Racket is an organization that collects winter clothing and donates it to families in need. We are asking students to bring gently used and washed winter gear to help support this cause.

Examples of what you can contribute:

  • Jackets
  • Gloves /mittens
  • Snow Pants
  • Boots
  • Hats/earmuffs

Donations will be accepted until November 14, 2025.

Update| IPPs

Parents/Guardians can expect IPPs to go home for review/signatures on November 19, 2025. Documents will either be emailed or printed as per parent input. Please return signature pages by November 25th, 2025. Please contact your child's homeroom teacher if you have questions or concerns.

Remind| Traffic Safety

As the days are getting shorter and darker, we are noticing that students are more at risk when crossing the roads around the school. Please be sure to follow all traffic laws and regulations including:

  • No parking in the bus zone
  • No U-turns
  • Be aware of crosswalks and people crossing the road
  • Do not enter the staff parking lot

Thank you for your support in keeping our students and community safe.

Remind| Winter is Coming!

Calgary’s weather can include snow, cold temperatures and wind chill and that makes getting to and from school challenging. Families are reminded to prepare and take extra caution during the winter months and periods of extreme weather.

Please note, CBE Schools Rarely Close Due to Snow or Cold Temperatures

All CBE schools will remain open to provide a safe, warm, and secure environment for students. Even with adverse weather conditions, assume that schools are open unless you hear otherwise from your school. Information regarding any school closures due to weather will be posted on the CBE websites and social media, and shared with local news media.

Be Prepared

Families should ensure they are prepared for all weather conditions. Children should be well prepared and dressed for the weather. Students will continue to be expected to go outdoors during the day (PE classes and lunch hour) unless temperatures reach -20 Celsius or colder including the wind-chill factor.

Children should not be left unattended at bus stops for any period of time when temperatures are extreme, under any circumstances. They should have clear instructions on how long to wait for the bus and what to do if the bus does not arrive.

Families should ensure that they have back-up care arrangements if transportation is delayed. Children should have a warm place to stay before and after school (i.e. with a neighbor or a nearby relative).

We respect parents/guardians' right to make their own decisions about sending their children to school. If your child will not be attending classes, please ensure you contact the school attendance line to report on the absence.

Transportation Delays

With changing weather conditions, roads may also be congested and slippery, resulting in possible traffic and bus delays. Unusually cold or stormy weather can result in buses being delayed. Unexpected mechanical problems with the bus may also occur more frequently at this time of year. Children should be dressed appropriately for the colder weather as buses cool off very quickly.  How delays are communicated:

Remind| Attendance

Parents/guardians must contact the main office to report a child late or absent on the attendance line (403-777-7290, PRESS 1). Please be sure to include your child's first and last name, reason, and duration of the absence. Taking the time to let us know that your child will be absent before school starts helps us to complete attendance accurately and reduces the automated calls you receive.

If you are going on vacation, or if your child/ren will be away for more than a week, an Extended Absence Form is required.

Please visit our school website for more information.
