Hello, Simon Fraser School families.

We would like to take a moment to revisit our expectations for drop-off and pick-up. Please remember that buses unload students on the north side of the school in the morning and load students on the north and east sides in the afternoon. Stopping in these designated bus zones, even for a moment, creates significant challenges for our buses and puts students at risk.

We know the morning rush can be hectic, but safety must remain our top priority. Please watch your speed, avoid U-turns in this busy area, and be mindful of the high number of students crossing the road, especially during darker morning hours. With more than 650 students, a single exception can quickly become a pattern that impacts many others.

We also ask that families do not use the staff parking lot for drop-off or pick-up. Doing so restricts access for staff who are arriving or departing throughout the day.

Thank you for your ongoing cooperation and for helping us keep our school community safe.

Inform| Lost and Found

Our Lost & Found has once again grown into a small mountain of jackets, water bottles, and mystery lunchboxes. If your child is missing something, or if they just enjoy the thrill of discovering what they’ve abandoned, please remind them to stop by this week and take a look!

Everything left at the end of the week will be donated, because the socks have unionized and demanded a new home. Dobby is free!

Thanks for checking, rescuing, and reclaiming before things wander off forever!

Inform| Locker Clean Out

Students will be asked to clean out their lockers prior to leaving for winter break. Please send your child an additional bag for their things this week. Fun fact: PE clothing becomes especially ripe two weeks in a locker.

Inform| Athletics

Thanks to all our wrestling athletes and coaches for a short, but awesome season. We also want to thank our wonderful families who supported this dedicated crew. We were impressed by your dedication at the divisional meet and positive engagement.

Alberta’s Fairness and Safety in Sport Act, SA 2024, c F-2.5(the “Act”), came into effect Sept. 1, 2025. This legislation mandates that participation in female-only leagues, classes, or divisions be limited to athletes whose sex recorded at birth is female.

As a result of this legislation, CBE has implemented  Administrative Regulation 3034: Athlete Eligibility Confirmation a cross all schools. Every student athlete 12 years of age or older who registers to play in a female-only league, class or division (or their parent or guardian if the student athlete is between 12-18 years of age) will be required to confirm in writing that they understand and meet the eligibility requirements to compete as set out in the Act and the accompanying Fairness and Safety in Sport Regulation (the “Regulation”).

Please note that Volleyball is considered a female only league for junior/senior girls. teams. As such, students wishing to participate in those teams require the Athlete Eligibility Confirmation form to be completed. Forms can be picked up in the main office. If you have completed this form previously, there is no need to do so again.

Inform| Healthy Hunger “Fun Snack Days”

Our Healthy Hunger lunches have been off to a fantastic start! This initiative has been a fun and easy way to give students something to look forward to, while raising valuable funds for our school. So far, we’ve partnered with Subway, OPA!, and Noodlebox, with lunches offered every second Wednesday.

We plan to continue with these vendors in the new year and are also explore the idea of adding a “Fun Snack Day” on alternating Wednesdays. Potential snack vendors include Kernels, Tim Hortons, Jugo Juice, Dairy Queen or Menchies. These will be available to order on your Healthy Hunger website starting in January.

Remind| Indoor Shoes

As the weather gets wet and slushy, students need indoor shoes for school. We realize that children are growing like weeds, and it is hard to sometimes keep up, but for the safety and security of all our kiddos, we ask that you please ensure your child has indoor shoes that are safe for Physical Activity. If money is a barrier to having these vital items, please let Principal Clark know.

Remind| Extended Absence Procedures

As we head into the winter months, we would like to remind families that Extended Absence Forms are required for any planned absences longer than five school days. These forms are available through the school office or online and help us maintain accurate records and support student success.

We recognize the strong positive correlation between attendance and a student’s achievement in school. Under Alberta’s Education Act, students may be excused from attending school for reasons such as illness or unavoidable circumstances, religious holidays, suspension/expulsion, or with permission from the Board (e.g., cultural, spiritual, or ceremonial reasons). Any absence outside of these exemptions is considered unexcused, and the following apply:

  • Schools are not mandated to provide schoolwork for extended absences, nor are teachers required to provide support for missed instructional time when students return.
  • Families are responsible for reviewing and supporting their child’s learning during an extended absence.
  • Extended absences may impact a child’s academic progress.
  • The cumulative effect of multiple extended absences can lead to significant gaps in learning and achievement.
  • Extended time away may also affect a student’s peer relationships.

While teachers do not create work packages for extended absences, and we are not an online institution, families are encouraged to check MyCBE for ongoing assessment information and Google Classroom for posted assignments, classroom updates, and general information to help students stay informed.

Thank you for your understanding and partnership in supporting consistent attendance and learning. Please contact the school office if you have any questions.
